Adopting a shih-tzu is a big commitment. Your shih-tzu will be part of your family for 15 or more years! It's important to adopt from a premier breeder to ensure that your puppy will be healthy, happy, and provide years of companionship for you.

At Southern Gems Shih-tzu, our program is simply exceptional.  Choosing dogs of superior quality and providing superior care sets Southern Gems Shihtzu apart from the rest.  We provide top veterinary care, superior nutrition, proper socialization, and excellent training.

Whether or not you choose to adopt a puppy from Southern Gems, we are here to help you in your search to find the perfect puppy for your family!

Here are a few guidelines of what to look for in a Premier Breeder:

A premier breeder selectively breeds dogs for the betterment of the breed.
A premier breeder is an expert on their breed of dog.
A premier breeder has dogs that are registered by the AKC.
A premier breeder welcomes you into their home to meet both puppy and parents.
A premier breeder requires you to sanitize hands/shoes prior to entering the home.
A premier breeder willingly provides both client and veterinary references.
A premier breeder proudly provides pedigree information on their dogs.
A premier breeder feeds premium food.
A premier breeder is honest with you at all times.
A premier breeder interviews potential puppy parents.
A premier breeder refunds deposits if the adoption does not take place.
A premier breeder houses all dogs inside the home as pampered pets.
A premier breeder has well-groomed, well mannered dogs.
A premier breeder provides superior health care provided by a top notch veterinarian.
A premier breeder provides a written health guarantee.
A premier breeder requires a spay/neuter contract for puppies adopted to pet homes.

Above all, a premier breeder provides support for the lifetime of every puppy!

Please do not purchase a puppy from a breeder if ANY of the following are true:
An unethical breeder wants to meet you at a location other than their home.
An unethical breeder hesitates to provide pedigree information on their dogs.
An unethical breeder hesitates to allow you to come to their home.
An unethical breeder pushes for an immediate decision from you.
An unethical breeder accepts deposits or payment without speaking with you first.
An unethical breeder does not refund deposits.
An unethical breeder has multiple breeds of dogs.
An unethical breeder houses dogs ANYWHERE other than inside the home.
An unethical breeder has unclean home conditions, unclean or poorly groomed dogs.
An unethical breeder does not have records of examination by a licensed veterinarian.
An unethical breeder feeds low quality food.
An unethical breeder allows adoption before a minimum of 8 weeks of age.
An unethical breeder speaks negatively about other breeders in order to secure a sale.

Purchasing a puppy from a backyard breeder, puppy mill, or pet store keeps unethical people in business and subjects more innocent dogs to inhumane treatment.
